Episode 50 – Amityville: The Awakening

We’ve made it to episode 50! What a milestone. Ashlee thinks we should be well past 50 by now, while I’m surprised we even got this far.

When we began the podcast, Blumhouse Productions wasn’t even a household name yet. It didn’t seem daunting at all to watch all of their movies because until we started the show, Blumhouse only released a handful of movies every year. This year, there will be a dozen Blumhouse movies released on Hulu alone with the Into the Dark anthology!

So maybe the premise of the show has been slashed to bits at this point, but the goal of the show is right on. I had two objectives in mind when I first hit record:

  1. Learn how to produce a show
  2. Capture silly moments with my wife

I’d say I succeeded, and that just gives us more motivation to keep this experiment going.

The quality of the show has improved immensely since we began. Not only do we have better equipment (I was definitely recording straight onto my laptop for a stretch), but I’ve gotten better at choosing topics and directing the conversation.

I want to thank all our friends and fans who listen to the show. Every time I question whether anyone is listening and whether it’s worth putting this out there, we get another bump in listeners. We’re like Tinkerbell — if you keep clapping, we won’t stay dead.

We might never finish going through Blumhouse’s catalog, but we’ll keep at it as long as you continue to listen and support us.

Thank you, and enjoy episode 50 of A Blumhouse Divided.

Love,

David and Ashlee

Episode 43 – Insidious: Chapter 2

Ashlee and David have finished the entire Insidious franchise with Insidious: Chapter 2.

This movie is incredible, and at the time it released, it was one of the movies where we were starting to recognize the Blumhouse Productions logo in front of all these horror movies we loved. It feels good to have finally covered the entire franchise on the show because Insidious is a major factor in why we do the podcast.

Don’t forget to listen to the other episodes for the Insidious series, and reach out on Facebook and Twitter to let us know how our new recording setup sounds. I’m excited to take the show further.

Episode 42 – Insidious

The much belated Insidious episode! Belated because it’s weeks after our last episode, belated because we recorded this weeks ago, and belated because I’ve wanted to talk about this movie since we started the show. Where Ashlee loves Blumhouse because of Paranomal Activity, I love the studio because of the Insidious franchise. Of course, you can read all about my love of the franchise in my blog post about it.

Don’t forget to listen to our episodes on Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key!

I hate making excuses, but they are interesting excuses, so I’ll talk about them.

We finally have a new mic setup! I got a USB mixer so Ashlee and I can each have our own mics and the show won’t sound like a conference call anymore. It’s changed up my workflow, though, and I should have gotten some pop filters too.

We also have a sponsor this week. I’m proud to talk about Multiplex 10. I’m a big fan, and the creator, Gordon, is my go to movie buddy for the movies Ashlee won’t see. Multiplex 10 is an animated short and an ongoing series about a b-movie fan and a film snob who work together at a movie theater, so I highly recommend, listeners!

It took me forever to record the promo because I’m awful at speaking into a mic by myself in a room. The spot took about 200 takes. I’m still learning how to do this stuff, but hey, that’s why I do this show.

And lastly, the show got pushed back because we lost my grandfather. We were close, so it was devastating. My grandfather was always interested in what I was up to, so explaining to him what a podcast is and that Ashlee and I were making a radio show in our living room was fun. I never played the show for him, but he though it was cool.

Sorry to end on that bummer note, but that’s where we are at today. Thanks for sticking around, and get ready for our next episode – Insidious: Chapter 2!

Insidious and The New Ghostbusters

One of my personal myths, a story I misheard or misremembered and retold to all my friends all my life, is that I watched Ghostbusters so much as a child that the tape wore out. At one recent retelling, my mom laughed. She just got rid of the tape because she was sick of it. But the core truth of… Read more →

Episode 40 – Insidious: Chapter 3

If you podcast with one of the dead, all of them can hear you…

It’s finally time to talk about Insidious! This is my favorite Blumhouse franchise, and we’ll discuss the entire series in the next four episodes. We begin with Insidious: Chapter 3, and we’ll watch the movies chronologically. For those keeping score at home, that’s Insidious: Chapter 3Insidious: The Last KeyInsidious, and finally, Insidious: Chapter 2.

Get ready to enter the Further as we talk about demons, spectral sightings, and our number one bae Lin Shaye!

Episode 37 – Jessabelle

Wheelchairs! Bathtub Ghosts! Tarot cards! Voodoo! Reno 911!

We’re back, talking about 2014’s Jessabelle. Ashlee and I also settled on Wednesdays as our official recording day, which is going to make it a lot easier to fit the show into the rest of our schedules.

Next week’s movie is Martyrs (2015).

And as we mentioned on the show, we lost a friend of the show – Dustin Pace, aka duddyinmotion. He was a sweet guy and a wonderful artist who was beloved in the horror community. Please consider contributing to the memorial fund to help his wife Tiffany.

Episode 36 – The Belko Experiment

I saw The Belko Experiment while it was in theaters because I had lots of time after being laid off. Ashlee didn’t have a chance to see it until it hit VOD. I really dug this one. It’s cathartic, and has James Gunn’s brand of humor I’ve always loved. In my opinion, it nails office culture better than Office Space.

Podcaster pro tip: Don’t stick a microphone in your wife’s face when everyone is ready for bed. We are both tired, but it’s still a pretty fun episode. We’ll figure out a real schedule for this show eventually. No promises.

We had two great horror movies in a row with Get Out and Split, but it’s been all over the place since. Ashlee’s craving some old school Blumhouse, so if you want to read ahead, our next episode is Jessabelle. I just picked up the Blu-ray.

Keep up with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and please subscribe and review the show on iTunes! Tell your friends about us. Let us know what you thought of The Belko Experiment or any other movie we’ve talked about.
